You can put him on a hand range, and AJ fits the bill, so you could be beat, or he could be drawing to a better pair than you. At this point, you have to look a the player’s past history of how he played in that spot. You could make a stand, or you could reraise to try to take down the pot. Depending on where you do here, defines in that player’s psychology, how you will play in future hands with him. It will also affect how you play in future hands with him. In deciphering the metagame, you need to figure out why he saw you as bluffing the hand, and appropriately fix the problem. Was he just a loose player? Was he aware that you were simply using positional advantage? All of these non-quantifiable factors are important parts of the metagame. Some of the simple things to remember about metagame is: it includes your table image, it includes your own perception of the other players, it is a long term thing, not meant to be a deciding factor in one given hand, but over the course of play with the players you’re playing against. If the players you’re playing against have no concept of the game that goes on off the table, then using the metagame to your advantage may not be in your best interest. You may be better off in those situations to just play solid, mathematically sound poker (especially at the lower stakes).

Normally, if you don’t make your poker hand on the flop, it’s a good idea to get out of the hand. When I have a online poker hand that I think is worth playing, I have a tendency to keep playing, even if it misses the flop completely in hopes of drawing a winning poker online hand on the turn or the river. I once had a Queen-Jack of Hearts and saw the flop come out Ace of Clubs, 9 of Spades, and 6 of Spades. I completely missed the flop, but I stayed in the hand, hoping that I’d pull a pair or even runners for a nut straight. This type of play hardly ever works out for me and it usually ends up leaving me with less chips and more self-loathing. It usually happens when I’m bored and I just want to play or if I’ve been on a dry streak of cards and I’m desperate to see some action. If you find yourself growing restless, of you’ve finally gotten some decent pocket cards, make sure that you like the flop before continuing on, because you might start trying to talk yourself into making a desperate play for a good turn or river, a play that you’ll almost always end up regretting.

The looser players are more likely to go into a hand with a weak hand, and if a tight player enters the pot, you can bet that he’s got a stronger hand. Weaker hands will usually stand up against a looser player, as they generally will go into a hand with much weaker cards than a tight player will. A feeler bet after the flop can usually work against a loose player, since the flop is less likely make his hand. If you are facing a tight player, the odds are that he’s got a solid starting hand, so you usually need some pretty strong cards to stay in the hand with a tight player. Bluffing doesn’t always work against these guys, because they usually don’t get involved unless they’ve got a hand they believe in.

Sometimes you can set a trap for your opponent in a poker hand in one move. Slowplaying on the flop might lead to a bet than you then checkraise, springing the fact that you had disguised your holding, and the cat is out of the bag. Some traps, once set, though, do even more damage if you continue to let them lie, as long as you are careful to make sure that the trap you set doesn’t end up coming back to rip you up rather than who you’d set it for.
Watching Tom Dwan play his cash game on episodes of the recent season of High Stakes Poker displayed, I think, some new evidence for the way an extended trap can work. Even in spots where Dwan might not have the ultimate nuts, he would often check and check and check down his largish hands even when his opponent checked back, waiting for them to be the one that sprung the trap on themselves. He proved himself willing to make nothing on two small streets if the final street could potentially end up paying off more than the whole package itself.
Laying extended traps instead of immediate ones is good to keep a variety in your expectation, so that your poker online opponent won’t take a defensive position the pattern inherent in your usual play.
