Monday morning first thing and the phone rings. It’s a typical
call, since the previous Thursday a small business has noticed
that some of the images on it’s’ website are starting to appear
on other sites. They know enough to understand that once these
images are out, they will be unable to prevent their spread.
What they’re after now is advice on how to stop them from being
stolen in the first place.
Everyone is always wiser after the event and there is a certain
complacency in all of us that says it’s not going to happen to
me but when it does we need to know what we can do about it. In
this case the damage has been done. Someone had hacked into
their site and downloaded approximately 20,000 images. Some of
these were licensed from image suppliers and some were taken by
themselves at great expense. The cost to the company is easy to
work out in terms of what they paid for the images in the first
place, but what is more difficult to ascertain is the ongoing
revenue loss that will occur.
Ongoing loss because the nature of these images means that the
more exposure they get, the smaller their value becomes. In this
case the law of supply and demand applies to intellectual
property just as much as anything else. By the time the web
server logs were checked and the perpetrators identified, six
days had elapsed. In that time these images were identified on
twenty eight different websites and that number was growing by
the day. By then it was a practical impossibility to have them
removed.
Even worse was that the images appeared on an image brokers site
and were actively being sold with a license for use by other
people. The fact that this site was in Russia meant that there
was nothing the company could do to prevent it. In short they
simply had to swallow the loss and try to prevent it happening
again.
What we all need to understand is that it is very difficult, if
not entirely impossible, to prevent your data being stolen. If
they want it badly enough, they will get it. Your job is to make
sure that you make it so difficult, they give up and try
elsewhere. For most of us, the basic security of our website is
handled by the site’s hosts. Being certain of your hosts
capabilities is a good start to securing your data. Have you
ever asked them how they secure your web server? Perhaps now is
a good time to do it.
Web hosting is like any other business. They concentrate
generally on the “bits” you can see in order to get your
business. What they can cut costs on, they will and, although
any good host will have security firmly at the top of their
list, some of the cheaper ones may look at ways of reducing
their spending. One very security conscious host is
www.serverwise.com. I’ve used them for a number of years and
always found them to be good when it comes to protecting your
web site.
After securing your server the next thing to look at has to be
ways of protecting the data. Most theft occurs directly from the
web site itself and if you’re trying to protect images, there
are plenty of watermarking programs that can apply a watermark
to your images. Take a look at www.hotscripts.com for example
and search for watermarking. You can also find hints and tips on
preventing people from saving your files to their local pc on
many sites, http://javascript.internet.com is a good source for
free scripts and searching on Google for javascripts will reveal
more sources.
The company in the example I used earlier had watermarking
protection for all their images but, unfortunately for them, the
watermarking was dynamic meaning that the images themselves were
unwatermarked and the watermarking was applied when the browser
displayed the images. What this meant was that by stealing the
images from the server, the thieves were able to take
unwatermarked images.
There is a way around this and something like Strong Arm from
www.liquidfrog.com can help by taking invisible watermarks or
copyright information and embedding it directly into the image.
Being able to positively identify a file on someone else’s
website as belonging to you can be a strong persuader in making
them remove your content from their site even if they feel
they’ve bought it legitimately. By proving ownership of a file
you can bring a large amount of pressure to bear and save
yourself the legal costs of issuing a cease and desist notice.
So far we’ve looked mainly at ways of preventing image theft.
What if your site contains document files or exe files that you
make available for download perhaps? How do you prevent them
from being stolen? Including a copyright in a text document is
something that everyone should be doing but it’s very easy to
remove that and claim the work as your own. Given the fact that
you are allowing people to take these files from your site, you
should be including a way of identifying them so that, if you
see them on another site, you can prove ownership. Again
something like Strong Arm can help.
Finally, having done what you can to prevent the theft of your
data, you need to check regularly that your web site is still
secure and that your file protection systems are working. You
also need to check what the current trends are for data security
by making sure you understand where the latest threats are
coming from. At the moment China and Russia are the two major
culprits but this will probably change over time as less
advanced countries come up to speed. New ways of stealing data
are always just around the corner and you need to be one step
ahead the whole time. It’s only by keeping on top of it that you
can effectively prevent the data you’ve bought and paid for
being stolen!

yourself right. Believe in yourself and your ability to be
successful. It is unlikely you will take action if you think
your efforts will be wasted. Expect success.

One important conclusion is that volunteers may in fact exaggerate their own size when permitted to measure themselves.
So considering the results above, it would seem that the average erect penis measures between 5.7 and 6.4 inches in length and between 4.7 and 5.2 inches in circumference.

Still struggling to pay off the college loan? Have you disconnected your cell phone just to avoid those darn creditors? Need a quick get rich scheme? Well…maybe not that but in this article you will find some practical ways on saving money while attending your post secondary institution.
Books
College book prices have been rising along with the cost of tuition, and it is no wonder why so many students have resorted to photocopying their texts. Instead of photocopying why not buy an old edition book, all the information that you will need to know is there and you can keep that book as a reference. It’s not like the gravitational acceleration of earth is going to change with the new edition…right?
Too broke to buy book then try to find your books at the local library, not the school’s library. You will be amazed at how many books you will find at the local library, not only is it convenient but is also cheap. True, if you borrow a book for a semester it would cost you a late fee but I mean who cares right, since the $10 late fee charge is nothing when compared to $200 price tag of a new book price.
Another upcoming trend in colleges these days is the trend for students to rent their books. I guess these students probably wanted to keep their books as reference or may still need them for the following year and thought they could make some extra cash by renting them out. If you are thinking about renting then its best to rent to people that you know, and always have a legal signed document.
Always try to buy used. Many colleges now have a book buy back program, and these books can be found at the college used book room. Also, there are a ton of online book exchange sites on the net which are both free and convenient.
When to buy used & when to buy new? Good question. My rule is this, if a book is say like 4 years old then its best to buy used. The only time I recommend buying new is if the book is less than 4 years old, since it is more likely to being the latest edition, and you know for sure that the same edition is going to be used next term. This way you can sell your books for the maximum profit.
Food
Instead of buying a pop, from the local vending machine why not just buy a case of 24 to store at your locker or dorm room. You will be amazed at how much you will save when you buy in bulk.
Another way of saving on food is to visit your friend’s fridge on a daily basis and when ever possible try to attend to any free food locations (parties, club meetings…etc) on campus.
Clothing
Instead of buying those brand new “check marked” shoes, why not save your money for something that you will really need in college (laptop, books, contraceptives). Try to visit the local thrift store and check Ebay on a daily basis, you will be amazed at how many $1 t-shirts are out there.
Printing & Photocopying
Many students save money on printing and photocopying by the use of a scanner. The student simply scans what he/she needs and emails the scanned file back to him/her self. Not only will you save money, but will also have an electronic copy of the file which you could later download to your laptop or pda.
If you really must print then try not to use the school printing services. Most of the time these services will cost you an extra 5-10 per page, cents which could go towards the purchase of a new ink cartridge.
Money
Instead of using a credit card, why not only keep cash in your wallet/purse. Not only does this give an exact measure of how much cash you have at hand, and can spend, but will also avoid you from living above your means.
Apart from that you could also try finding a part time job on campus, not only will you get some extra cash but will also gain some valuable experience that you can put on your resume.

Health food doesn’t need a definition, does it? We all know what health food is it’s yogurt and granola, whole-grain cereal and organically grown vegetables and fruit. It’s 100% natural, no preservatives or dyes, unadulterated, pure. When you put all that together, you should have healthy food, yet all too often, what’s marketed as health food these days barely classifies as food, let alone health food.
Take a look at one of our favorite health food choices - yogurt. It hit supermarket shelves in the early seventies, though it had been available before that in health food stores and restaurants. Real yogurt has two ingredients: milk (whole, skim or low fat) and live yogurt cultures. That’s health food - calcium, vitamin D, vitamin A, protein. Next time you’re at the supermarket, take a look at the dairy case. You’ll find row after row of hyper-sweetened brightly colored rainbow swirled and candy-sprinkled yogurt packaged in ways that appeal to our littlest consumers - children. Millions of parents buy the enticing packages, secure that because it’s yogurt, they’re buying food that’s healthy for their children.
One look at the label, though, and it’s clear that these kiddy yogurts (as well as most of the yogurt that’s marketed to adults) are a far cry from heath food. Some of the most popular yogurts for children contain anywhere from 3 to 10 added teaspoons of sugar. Considering how many teaspoons of yogurt are in a single serving, you might as well hand your child the sugar bowl. In addition, most yogurts include “natural” ingredients that have little to do with health food. Ingredients like pectin (to thicken yogurt), carrageenan (a seafood extract that gives some yogurts their body, and annatto (for color) add little nutritionally to yogurt. They’re in the mix to serve one main purpose: to help yogurt survive its trip from the factory to your table.
You’ll find the same situation with other foods that originally made their debut as health foods in the seventies. Granola has become granola bars with chocolate chips and gooey caramel. Whole wheat flour is bleached and denuded of its flavorful kernels. Sunflower seeds are roasted in oil and salted. Even brown rice comes in the instant variety.
Healthy food not health food
The secret to feeding your family (and yourself) a healthful diet of healthy food is to read the labels. The United States Food & Drug Administration has laid out strict guidelines for nutritional labeling of all food products. The nutrition label will tell you all you need to know to choose real health foods. Some things to keep in mind when reading nutrition labels for health foods:
* In the ingredient’s portion of the nutrition label, ingredients are listed in order by amount. The ingredient that’s listed first is the main ingredient, followed by the next largest amount, etc.
* The nutrition facts label must list each of the required nutrients even if the food provides 0% of the recommended daily value.
* The nutrition facts label must list what portion of the food’s calories is derived from fat, from sugar, from protein and from carbohydrates. It will also break down the fat into saturated and unsaturated fat.
Reading labels on everything you feed your family is the best way to tell whether a food is really a health food - or just masquerading as one.
